As a parent in training, I am constantly being shown how to show up for my kids. What I’ve learned to date is that often they just want me to listen, with obvious signs that I’m actually paying attention. This has been accomplished with a simple hmm, huh or, really? Direct eye contact has also served me well. Another savvy skill is visualizing my heart open so each word penetrates inward. This task isn’t so simple to master for a parent on the run or one who has their own agenda that’s waiting to pounce. In those tempting moments, I just focus on my breath. If I interrupt with a comment or judgment, they usually become distant, frustrated, leaving our next chat with little to no flow. Without flow, there’s no connection and that’s just so dang sad.
So what’s my lesson this week?
I’ve learned to button up till I’m asked. I never assume a stance that I have all the answers or even one, for that matter. I wait for them to want to have a discussion. Then once they open that door, I ask questions that get them thinking about what their desired outcome is, not mine.
All of this dear friends is to serve one of my most passionate intentions of all time. To provide a safe and stable environment for my daughters to use their own voices.
Namaste parents. We are courageous!
